FIWNA organized the 3rd virtual discussion focusing on "Tumyang Customary Law of the Limbu," exploring traditional legal frameworks governing dispute resolution, ceremonies, marriage, and land ownership.
FIWNA successfully organized the third in a series of virtual discussions focusing on "Tumyang Customary Law of the Limbu," exploring the traditional legal frameworks of one of Nepal's prominent Indigenous communities.
The presentation examined how this historical system governed various aspects of Limbu life, including dispute resolution, birth and death ceremonies, marriage practices, and land ownership within family structures.
Ms. Amrita Thebe – Advocate and Indigenous women's rights defender.
The session addressed how Tumyang Customary Law functioned as a comprehensive regulatory system before being systematically undermined following the Gorkha regime's entry during Nepal's reunification period. Ms. Thebe drew upon extensive research to illuminate this important aspect of Limbu cultural heritage and its contemporary significance for Indigenous women's rights advocacy.
